What is inclusive teaching?

It concerns itself with teaching methods that encourage and support accessible learning for students of all backgrounds. There are certain strategies that teachers and educational practitioners can utilize to better recognize a variety of skills and differences that exist amongst students. The sign of a good teacher is to ensure that a student’s learning environment only seeks to improve upon the strengths that they already have. Here are a few measures a teacher can implement to ensure that their pedagogy is inclusive.

Course Design: Oftentimes, the syllabus is already pre-determined by an educational board. However, how a lesson is delivered and administered to the students depends entirely on the teacher. Remember to take into account of all the different perspectives and approaches – especially the ones that are usually not taken up in a classroom. This would mean involving content that can be understood from the multiple vantage points a child might have – be it cultural, ethnic, racial, gender-wise, cognitive, etc. This to show that while all students don’t learn the same way, there will always be space for them to exercise their skillsets. No one should be excluded due to the way a lesson is taught.

Clear Expectations: Establishing a grading rubric or system is hard enough. Creating one that is diverse and inclusive is hard work – but it is work that pays off more than you can imagine. It Is vital to let your students be aware of their performance expectations. This information needs to be provided to them in a clear and accessible manner as it can empower them to be accountable for their own learning curves and growth. This would further allow them the pathway to achieving such set expectations in their own unique manners.

Finding Support: If a child is not meeting the set expectations within a classroom, it is essential that they are given a clear route to where they can avail support. There is no standard pace for learning and success – and that is why it is critical that every student has access to tools and people that can help them improve their performance. This could mean peer groups, mentorships, extra-curricular avenues, counseling, and so on.
